Freeze Drying - a safe end simple solution for th ermal drying of SAS

Purpose and goal

The project managed to show that the freeze drying process performs in the expected way. The energy for drying is much lower then the energy gained during incineration. The aim of building a large scale equipment was not reached but we managed to build a pilot rig that convinced a consortium of a large waste management firm and a product developement firm to continue the work with us.

Results and expected effects

The unexpected outcome of the project was that the technology is viable also in Sweden. The project developed and verified dimensioning criteria like freeze temperature, curing time and optimal drying temperature. We did not succeed in building a product ready for the market but we proved the technology.

Approach and implementation

The original project was to ambitious from the beginning. The world of product development is complicated and expensive. It is better to work in smaller scale until you find partners to help you go to the next level. This experience is important to use in future projects. It is easy to be over optimistic but if you aim for the stars at least you can reach the tree tops. To build a consortium with a product building company might be a good idea. You need to consider how to build your product in an economic way already from the beginning.
