Purpose and goal

Fall accidents are a major public health problem in Sweden today, affecting a third of everyone in Sweden over the age of 65 annually and costs close to 25 billion per year. Through user-centered development, FRAiL has been developed to improve the diagnosis and evaluation of balance and risk of falls, which have been tested by patients and healthcare professionals and validated by researchers. FRAiL supports Agenda 2030 main goals 3.8 and 3D by increasing efficiency and capacity regarding identification and care of at-risk patients for cases.

Expected results and effects

FRAiL has been developed in collaboration between healthcare, research, designers and seniors to meet the need for a fast and easy-to-use system to improve the diagnosis of balance and fall risk in the elderly. FRAiL has been tested by about 450 seniors and 3 caregivers and evaluated by researchers. FRAiL supports Agenda 2030 main goals 3.8 and 3D by increasing efficiency and capacity regarding identification and care of at-risk patients for cases.

Planned approach and implementation

After analysis and development of personas, the product concept was developed for clinical use. Designers led the collaborative process between researchers, healthcare professionals, seniors and hard- and software developers. Following iterations of hardware and software, a second-generation prototype has been developed for clinical testing. FRAiL has been validated by researchers regarding reliability in the form of tests and re-tests as well as validity by comparison with the golden standard. FRAiL has been tested by about 450 seniors and 3 caregivers and evaluated.
