Important results from the project
Improve the existing validation techniques used in Al production today. Provide a validation base that can be used for future models of the electromagnetic stirring practices.
Expected long term effects
The new technique for characterization of Al melts leads to increased competence and attractiveness ( the program´s impact goals 7). With improved ability to characterize melts the possibility opens up to make changes in the process to meet future demand, which means increased flexibility for the manufacturer ( the program´s impact goals 4). An increased knowledge of temperature homogenization in the melt over time will help to improve the process so that less energy is required for melting of the raw material due to shorter process times ( program outcome targets 6).
Approach and implementation
The pre-study improved and expanded existing validation techniques that are used in aluminum production, and built a database which can be used as validation of future models of the process. The pre-study was focused on three different tasks. First, was to examine where you can find the most representative inclusion distribution of the entire melt, in a sampler. Second, how electrolytic extraction can be used for Al alloys . Third, a series of temperature measurements of the melt was carried out at various depths to detect irregularities in the temperature of the melt .
