Purpose and goal

The aim with the project ´Foodbank of Stockholm´ was to develop a safe and efficient model for a central foodbank. Through development and test of agreements, routines and guidelines with focus on traceability and cold chain in warehouse and logistics, we have developed thismodel. A prototype for a digital traceability system has also been developed. The foodbank consists of an operations manager and a driver. It is now part of the business area Matcentralen which is part of Stockholm City Missions Social Business. We will continue the development of a financing model during 2017.

Expected results and effects

The foodbank collects surplus food in online shops, B2B retailers, retailers and producers. It also receives donations in the warehouse. The effects for the organizations that receives deliveries from the foodbank are: lowered food costs, better quality and more diversity in the food served and time savings. At the end of 2016 the foodbank redistributes 1,5 ton surplus food per week and there is one participant in labor training

Planned approach and implementation

The central foodbank model has been developed i dialogue with the main interests: social organizations and the food industry. The model has been developed through study trips to Denmark and Norway, workshops and meetings with donators and receivers, training sessions for receivers, inputs from consultants and the food industry and daily feedback from receivers and donators. The transport pilot has been conducted from May to September and test of logistic system including warehouse was initiated in September an continues to June 2017.
