Status Completed

Purpose and goal

NuGel´s goal is to develop a technology that facilitates cleaning around dental implants with peri-implantitis and thus prepare for the re-growth of bone around the implant. The system combines a bactericidal gel with a light device to increase the antibacterial effect. Extensive testing and optimization of the system showed that the system was effective in eliminating bacteria from the dental implant surfaces, although the extra effect from the light source was not as great as initially predicted. Commercialization is scheduled after clinical testing.

Expected results and effects

The aim of the project was to develop a prototype that is safe and easy to use and effective in cleaning of dental implants, and possibly initiate clinical trials by the end of the three-year period. A prototype system has been developed and tested on bacteria, but has not yet gone to the clinical trial. The project has resulted in scientific publications and presentations at conferences, and participating companies have received important information for future commercialization of cleaning the system.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been managed as a ´R & D value chain´ through: formulation / design bench testing, animal studies and possibly clinical pilot studies. This approach proved to be very effective in determining the strengths and weaknesses of the components of the germicidal gel / light fixture systems, facilitating the optimization of the components. A large part of the project´s success can be attributed to the excellent coordination and cooperation between the four partners in the project, both academic and SMEs in Sweden and Norway.
