Important results from the project
The project´s purpose and goal has been to develop a technological solution helping blind and visually impaired users to navigate autonomously using positioning technology and get remote assistance via video communication. An additional objective has been to develop a commercialization plan for the developed prototype system. These objectives have been met and work is underway to bring the project into a commercial phase.
Expected long term effects
The end result is a product that gives visually impaired and blind confidence in their ability to independently navigate through urban areas along pre-planned routes. If difficulties arise, the user is given the opportunity to be assisted remotely by a person who can take part of live video sent from the user´s mobile phone. The expected effects are business opportunities when bringing a commercial service to the marketing, as well as societal impact in terms of improved opportunities for the visually impaired to get around safely and sustain an active lifestyle.
Approach and implementation
The approach has been that Navocap has focused on developing positioning technology with sufficient precision for pedestrian navigation, while Alkit has developed the video communication solution and the service platform for remote assistance. An agile development process has been applied with weekly follow-ups, which has worked well and led to the fulfillment of the project goals.
