Purpose and goal

The goals of SCALARE (SCALing softwARE) was to support industry in scaling its software capabilities when migrating from software being a secondary concern to being the most important aspect of delivering innovative competitive products and services. In the project a framework, (Scaling Management Framework, SMF) was developed supporting scaling in different dimensions (up, down, out) in three main areas: i. Products, systems, and services ii. Organisation and business domain iii. Processes and methods SMF is available through, among others, a book, web and consulting services.

Expected results and effects

The project has delivered short, medium, and long-term results, including the Scalability Management Framework supporting European industry in scaling software when software becomes the primary base of business rather than a secondary concern in hardware or mechanical development. Results also include a textbook, training material, consultancy services, tool sets, and an online portal facilitating building a community of industry partners (both members and non-members of the consortium) to share experiences and advice.

Planned approach and implementation

The work in the SCALARE project was divided into 5 work packages: WP1: Scaling Management Framework WP2: Scaling Products, Systems and Services WP3: Scaling Organisations and Business domains WP4: Scaling Processes and Methods WP5: Project Management, Dissemination and Exploitation Scalare took a holistic view on scaling. WP2-4 was focusing on different facets of scaling software while WP1 bound them together in the Scaling Management Framework. WP5 focused on dissemination including a book, seminars, web, consultancy services and social media.
