Venture Individual project: Research infrastructure - utilization and collaboration

Purpose and goal

Driven by the idea to use alarm data to explore machine learning across Industry 4.0 applications, the goal of this pilot study was to explore how to collect, store, manage and share data from the ESS Control System. Generally, we seek to make any control system data available for research and innovation but started with alarms as a feasible domain in which to explore machine learning. The project has rendered in relevant and positive indications for the feasibility and interests for such data sharing.

Expected results and effects

1) There is potential in collaboration with industrial partners and other research facilities where ESS data acts as a catalyst for collaboration in data ecosystems. 2) The alarm data is meaningful for exchange between different industry 4.0 facilities using standardized data and reference models, and may thus be used to explore machine learning for alarm applications. 3) ESS may share facility data under its open research data policy, after some adaptation of the detailed regulations.

Planned approach and implementation

The three main project partners - ESS as a problem owner, GoalArt as alarm experts and Lund University as computer experts - have been well-complementary competencies. Further, the reference group has provided valuable feedback and created a network of companies and researchers who are interested in pursuing these issues further. The project is a clear example of how ESS indirectly may contribute to innovation and industrial development by the facility itself being an advanced Industry 4.0 facility and where the openness in research contributes to sharing knowledge and data.
