Enhanced anti-corrosion protective coatings with graphene additive

Reference number
Coordinator RISE KIMAB AB - RISE KIMAB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 980 000
Project duration May 2019 - November 2020
Status Completed
Venture Strategic innovation program SIO Grafen

Purpose and goal

An intended application of the developed coating systems is for large-size industrial and infrastructure installations. By improving corrosion protection property of the paint systems developed in this project, economic and environmental benefits are expected. The obtained results are aimed to improve an understanding on the effect of graphene additive on corrosion protection property of the paint systems

Expected results and effects

Addition of graphene to corrosion protection coating systems was expected to enhance barrier properties, thus limit diffusion of corrosive ions, water and oxygen through the coating. Such behaviour helps delaying failure of coating by corrosion. However, effect of graphene addition on corrosion resistance and resistance to UV radiation in this project was inconclusive. Further characterization of the coated panels is recommended for a better understanding on the effect of graphene addition.

Planned approach and implementation

The scope of this project is to perform a systematic evaluation of the effect of graphene addition to different layers of protective coating systems applied on different metallic substrates. Functionalized graphene was added to zinc-rich primer, water-based epoxy and solvent-based epoxy of one -, two and three coat systems. Resistance to corrosion and UV-radiation of different coatings systems was evaluated to understand contribution of individual factors.
