ECSEL 2018 IA VIZTA Veoneer

Reference number
Coordinator Veoneer Sweden AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 665 466
Project duration May 2019 - October 2022
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project aims to develop sensor technology for 3D measurement needed for safe and self-driving vehicles, safety and security in society, smart buildings, mobile robotics for smart cities and ´industry 4.0´. Relevant for Veoneer is safer traffic and higher productivity in society through increased access to sustainable, safe and accessible transport for everyone in society, where self-driving vehicles are judged to be particularly beneficial to people who today find it difficult to get around due to for example disabilities.

Expected results and effects

The developed Lidar targeted reliability, coping with high external light levels, and enable production in large volumes at low cost. A design where the only movements are of MEMS components was chosen. The wavelength of 1550 nm allows increased output laser power, to increase range. Higher laser power needs to be produced economically and also entails increased local heating of the MEMS mirror. The noise level in the developed detector currently limits the system range. A better detector is deemed to become available, why the intended range is deemed reachable after the project´s end .

Planned approach and implementation

Billions of dollars have been invested in various LIDAR concepts for vehicles. These investments do not reflect the level of current demand, but the assumption that future automated vehicles will require capable and cost-effective LIDAR systems. The VIZTA project seeks to promote a viable LIDAR system with European components. The current "chip shortage" has shown the devastating effects a dependence on components from other regions of the world can result in. A European alternative is highly desirable and in line with the EU´s goal of technological sovereignty.
