Reference number
Coordinator Uppsala universitet - Institutionen för farmaceutisk biovetenskap, Avdelningen för medicinsk masspektrometri
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 065 549
Project duration January 2012 - October 2013
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

There have been three different aims to this project; 1. Set up methods and platforms for efficient lipid analysis, primarily within PD research; 2. Enhance equality in the academic environment through increased presence of female leaders and 3. Connect interesting and prosperous labs with each other for future synergistic effects.

Results and expected effects

Lipid analysis of Parkinsonian brain tissue from model animals led to one lead target in particular. In depth analysis of this molecule proved difficult due to methodological/technological constraints, which is why method development turned into a crucial part of the project. General analysis of heat stabilized tissue led to a general increase in lipid signal intensity. The reasons for this increased intensity have yet to be explained.

Approach and implementation

All of the above described goals are met to some extent according to plan. Especially, the method development within MSI research has been interesting and fruitful. Methods for increased sensitivity, through washing and derivatization of tissue, have been established. Cecilia Eriksson has been working at both research labs. The availability of samples has been somewhat of a bottleneck but for future studies this should be of no problem.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
