Funding from Vinnova SEK 791 427
Project duration January 2016 - December 2017
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project aimed to develop an ontology for automated interpretation of animal health data. We have extended the initial idea of ”an ontology” to ”an ontological framework”, mapped the knowledge that will be needed, secured partnerships to acquire data examples and expertise for individual modules (clinical, laboratorial, pathology, etc), and set a workflow to allow development of the framework in a modular approach. Modules will be developed and incorporated during the implementation phase.

Expected results and effects

The development phase of the project produced a permanent id for the ontological framework, a website and open book with information, and an pen repository online (github.com/SVA-SE/AHSO). More importantly, it established a community of involved surveillance practicioners and collaborators of knowledge. This establishes the necessary workflow for the ontologies to continue growing, in small knowledge models, after the project is finished, and continue to be updated to accomodate new knowledge.

Planned approach and implementation

We achieved the 4 main set goals of systematizing the modular development approach; creating routine for ontology extension through the incorporation of data health sources; setting a community for international collaborative development; and creating channels for dissemination. No functional module is yet implemented in practice, but this will be accomplished in the next phase, implementation. The results have made it possible to secure European finding (H2020) to extend this to a One Health framework.
