Purpose and goal

The Sodertorn Model aims to develop a systemic approach for delivering sustainable urban development in suburban contexts with eight municipalities south of Stockholm as the starting point. The project has sought to fulfill three goals: - Develop and test innovative solutions for sustainable urban development through on stakeholder collaboration - Develop, test and evaluate tools for increased citizen participation in different stages of urban planning processes - Identify and analyze methods and indicators for sustainable urban development

Expected results and effects

The overall result is a new model for urban planning practices that focuses on sustainable development were social, ecological and economical aspects are integrated in a structured and demand driven approach. Improved collaborations between public and private stakeholders fosters capacity building and knowledge exchange which contributes to a common understanding for local needs and supports cost effective sustainable solutions. Social sustainability should begin with engaging citizens where clear goals, aspects and indicators is a result from collaboration.

Planned approach and implementation

The Sodertorn Model has shaped new forms of collaborations between public, private and academic partners. A new organizational approach has been developed where stakeholders from different parts of the building sector, with different backgrounds and perspectives, collaboratively can generate innovative solutions that meets real municipal needs which leads to sustainable urban development.
