Important results from the project
Following objectives were met with the Type A grant -A competitive Swedish Brazilian research-innovation platform including Brazilian public and private sector partners has been set up. -A pre-study on potentials for resource based sanitation in Brazil has been produced. A specific technical feasibility study and identification of sites and scales of potential pilot demonstration has been drafted. -A proposal concept note has been elaborated, including a large range of Eco-technologies in water, sanitation, energy, and food production, for the implementation of R&D projects.
Expected long term effects
The project objectives and targets have been partially met. Financing resulted in unforeseen outcomes and activities; the project team organized two meetings more in Brazil beyond what was originally planned. The project team has been invited to collaborate through CISB with SAAB-Scania and SP. Södertälje municipality has joined the project team. In addition Södertälje municipality is planning to document Hölö treatment plants and using Nexus as an analytical model. FINEP has proved particularly interested in the BraSweds focus cloosing the loop using sustainable sanitation.
Approach and implementation
The project objectives could be achieved since there was an established academic network in Brazil with an interest in recycling technology and a clear need to establish contacts with academics, small businesses and innovators outside Brasil. It was easy to collaborate within Sweden, however, it was difficult to conduct online meetings with Swedish and Brazilian partners involved due to poor broadband at the universities. The participants´ knowledge of Portuguese facilitated data collection as current information on sanitation in Brasil is only available in Portuguese.
