Project duration January 2016 - August 2017
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Development of a test that separates blood from an individual before and after a blood transfusion (blood doping). A validation of method and product for WADA acceptance (World Anti Doping Agency) is through collaboration between research, product development, sport and accredited doping control lab. All steps from sampling, transportation, storage, analysis and reporting must be clarified.

Expected results and effects

Clarification of the processes that provide acceptance is preceded by the collection and analysis of blood samples required for product development. Samples of pure elite athlets and in the study doped individuals of different genetic origin collected and analyzed by advanced protein/peptide methods. From these analyzes, a few biomarkers are selected for validation and potential production in an upcoming doping test. The effect of the project is a correct study design, which ensures that future medical and legal decisions on suspected doping are taken on the correct grounds.

Planned approach and implementation

Validation of analytical protocols is crucial for achieving the expected effect. Likewise, knowledge of what tolerances are allowed in an analytical response, especially in order to be legally determinative. A large number of blood transfusions must therefore be carried out, in parallel with the collection of tests from elite athletes in training, competition and other extreme situations. Different genetic composition allows samples to be taken from a wide variety of populations. A statistically assured analysis is not necessarily strong enough to be sufficiently legal.
