Biotherapeutics targeting the immune system to accelerate wound healing in diabetic patients

Reference number
Coordinator Uppsala universitet - Institutionen för medicinsk cellbiologi
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 000 000
Project duration December 2014 - August 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aim with the listed activities in this application was to technically verify the product to bee. In brief was the activities experiments to add value to the patent application, finding optimal formulation and ways of production with good manufacturing standards, get a better understanding of the regulatory framework and perform an analysis of the market of diabetic foot ulcers. The data and information obtained have been used to achieve the listed objectives.

Results and expected effects

The most important outcomes from this project is that a patent application has been filed in Sweden and that we succeeded to find a protocol for lyophilization of the biotherapeutics and that clinical experts have been tied to the project and this has resulted in access to human skin biopsies and that we were able to visit clinics treating chronic wounds. The performed activities also resulted in that we got a second grant approved from VINNOVA and that the project has been noticed by several other players in the Nordic start up environment.

Approach and implementation

Several actors have been involved and the external actors that have performed some of the activities are Amatsi SEPS that optimized the formulation and produced a pilot batch, Roland Berger Strategy Consultants that performed a market analysis on diabetic foot ulcers and Novitas Patent AB that helped in filing a patent application. The communication between the people in the project have worked satisfying though we have learnt that the way of working in these semi-commercial projects differs from that in pure research projects and we will use this in planning future activities.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
