Biogas for Community Power in developing countries

Reference number
Coordinator FLEXENCLOSURE AB (PUBL)
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 600 000
Project duration March 2012 - January 2014
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project´s goal has been to develop a small-scale (10 kWe) commercial system of production and upgrading of locally produced biogas, including a genset for biogas. This objective has been fully achieved, Flexenclosure commercial offer ´eSite Biogas - Waste to reliable power´ is described in the enclosed brochure. The system is a hybrid system with biogas / batteries and solar panels as an option. A pilot plant has been installed in Botswana. From this Flexenclosure has secured a good understanding of the specific product requirements in developing countries.

Results and expected effects

Our assessment is that the project has given Flexenclosure a unique position in the market for small-scale (< 10 kW) off-grid electrification, with an industrialized hybrid system that in addition to solar / wind / grid / batteries now also includes a comprehensive solution for biogas. After completion of the technical development project we now go into a business development phase to take maximum commercial benefit of our technical leadership position.

Approach and implementation

The project has linked a number of companies / individuals to Flexenclosure provding the expertise necessary to define a system for biogas in developing countries. Data on performance and price for various system components has been collected via abundant suppliers contacts (globally). Biogas genset tests were performed early in the project together with installation of a biogas / solar / battery hybrid system in Botswana. Based on these experiences, the system has developed in several areas, including new control system software for and system solutions for power hardware.
