Purpose and goal
The aim of the project has been to: 1) Replace today´s manual production with a mechanized joining method that meets all requirements on the final product. The project has shown that this is possible. 2) Reduce the production time by at least 50%. The project has shown that this can be achieved with robotic TIG welding. 3) Develop a specification of equipment and manufacturing methodology needed to implement the suggested production process. A general specification that can be used for quotation requests from equipment suppliers has been developed.
Expected results and effects
By substantially reducing the time for joining, the total manufacturing cost can be significantly reduced. This enables a substantial price reduction and thus increases the opportunities for export sales, especially in price-squeezed markets. According to the manufacturer, a realistic estimate is that they could increase their export sales by 50-100% in the relatively short term after a successful implementation of a new manufacturing technology that increases the productivity and lowers the production cost.
Planned approach and implementation
Three different joining methods with robot have been tested to replace today´s manual production: MIG brazing, TIG brazing and TIG welding. TIG welding proved to be the method that gave the best end results and the most robust process. All types of joints found on the product have been tested with robotic TIG welding and produced good results. However, some small details (small washers) have proved poorly intended for robot welding and should continue to be joined manually, something that does not significantly affect the total time for joining of the product.
