Important results from the project
The aim was to initiate an R&D project where a methodology for minimizing residual stresses after forging and heat treatment of aerospace components are developed. The objective was to investigate if simulation can be used as a tool for minimization of residual stresses. The conclusion is that the simulation methodology must be developed and complemented with e.g. the contour method and practical tests. The consortium has the resources for implementation of such an R&D project.
Expected long term effects
The project concluded that existing simulation methodology must be developed and complemented with e.g. the contour method. The methodology must be validated by means of practical forging tests. The project concluded that it is possible to carry out such tests at Bharat Forge. A seminar for further discussion together with suppliers to the aerospace industry is planned.
Approach and implementation
The project was carried out in the form of telephone meetings and visits at Bharat Forge and GKN. The possibilities with simulation of the residual stresses after the cooling, solution annealing and precipitation hardening were discussed and initial tests with simulation of cooling were conducted at Bharat Forge. The possibilities with the contour method were discussed and also possibilities to carry out practical forging tests at Bharat Forge were discussed. A future seminar together with suppliers to the aerospace industry was discussed.
