Venture The strategic innovation programme Electronic Components and Systems:

Purpose and goal

The goal with the project have been to develop a product where we combine our RFIC (Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit) with an integrated antenna structure in the same package. The use case for this kind of device is within Indoor 5G systems. The purpose is to benefit from a cost effective way of assembly to enable a lower cost and to find new customers within this field of business.

Expected results and effects

Two different prototypes have been developed within the framework of the project with associated printed circuit boards and cooling mechanics. The developed RFIC that is packaged is also ready but is not yet fully qualified. We had hoped to reach a higher antenna gain on the included antenna elements but did not reach all the way. This is something we will take a closer look at in any upcoming project. The project has led to 2 patent proposals and that a doctoral student at Uppsala University will use the work for his doctoral dissertation.

Planned approach and implementation

The project have been executed according to a waterfall model with clear activities, internal milestones and deadlines. The RFIC have been designed and validated by Sivers IMA. The modelling of antenna systems and PCB (Printed Circuit Boards) together with the validation of the modules/prototypes have been made by Uppsala University (UU). The validation have been made partly in the anechoic chamber at UU. The modelling and design of the cooling elements have been done by Sivers IMA. Weekly project meetings have been held, partly using Teams during 2020 due to the Corona pandemic.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
