Purpose and goal

The main project goal is to develop a 5G RFIC using an in-packaged antenna (AiP) for Customer Premises Equipment (CPE). This solution will be used for FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) with the 5th Generation mobile networks. The solution shall be a low cost RFIC using a packaging technology that secure an in in-packaged antenna technology for the 5G mass-market providing high speed wireless data for FWA. The purpose is to get to a broader market segment due to the low cost compared to have a design that relies on a more expensive substrate and external components.

Expected results and effects

The result will yield a fully owned product that will be state of the art for the coming 5G wireless communication systems. One effect will be transfer of competence and knowledge between university and industry and vice versa, another will be development of solutions for the next generation 5G mobile network using mm-wave wireless technology targeting a fast growing demand due to the continuous growth of mobile data traffic. The potential of the project is to enable the exchange of multi-Gbps of data between mobile base stations and the home, with a technology that is robust and low cost.

Planned approach and implementation

WP1: Pre-study and Specifications The requirements on antenna and beam-steering performance, output power, receiver thresholds and suitable interfaces will be set together with customers and technology partners. Based on the outcome a suitable RF-front-end architecture will be selected. WP2: 5G Beam-steering chip design and validation Deliver a packaged RFIC implementing full Tx/Rx functionality and beam-steering capabilities. WP3: Antenna in Package (AiP) Implement a broadband highly directive in-package antenna array, which provides the required gain.
