Purpose and goal
With conventional 3D measurement, using laser technology, only the PSD (particle size distribution) on the surface of a granular bed can be measured. In this project, we have developed a regression model that, based on how the material is segregated during a known transhipment, can estimate the PSD throughout the entire granular bed with high precision. This has been done through granular simulation, sensitivity analysis and validation in test rigs. A "simulation pipeline" developed in Python that enables installation work with a customer in practical terms has also been developed.
Expected results and effects
The expectation was that we could develop a vision system that could estimate the entire size distribution of a bulk moving on a conveyor belt, ie not just what is visible to the camera. We succeeded in this.
Planned approach and implementation
A combination of physical experiments in test rigs with simulation of complex mathematical models has made it possible to develop a static model of the segregation in order to be able to draw conclusions about the entire bulk particle size distribution.
