Virtual Turbine demonstrator

Reference number
Coordinator GKN AEROSPACE SWEDEN AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 6 125 000
Project duration November 2014 - February 2018
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

This project demonstrated how innovative solutions could be designed when traditional module and component boundaries are challenging. A hardware demonstrator on module level was developed. The project also developed and demonstrated technologies to expand the design space to cover multiple components in a turbine structure. An example for a module integrated turbine structural design (´Integrated plug´) was used as a concrete case as a driver for the work.

Expected results and effects

Deliverables from the project was an open platform in the form of variable geometry models that was applied and adjusted to alternative engine configurations. Further, a network and infrastructure for efficient collaborative demonstrator development between company, institute and university was initiated and used

Planned approach and implementation

The project was a part of the Value Driven Development Cluster, in close collaboration with the clusters for Hot structures and Production Systems At GKN Trollhättan. The project built on research results that had been developed in recent and ongoing research projects. As a consequence, senior research resources constituted the base of the work. Several student projects was performed and several people from GKN was involved and integrated with contributing partners.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
