Technical and commercial verification of an x-ray source (Extension)

Reference number
Coordinator LUXBRIGHT AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 532 700
Project duration September 2014 - June 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The vision and goal of this project was to technically and commercially verify an x-ray source. This involves the general activities of technical development and testing, formulation of IP strategy, establish business relationships, design of production processes, formulating a quality policy, and strategy to attain proper sales. The projects main goal has been finalized in the realization of Luxbrights cold-cathode, field emission based, x-ray tube with microfocus function.

Results and expected effects

The result of this project is a functioning nano material based field emission x-ray tube with microfocus capability, that meets and in some cases surpasses the technical requirements of the market. The advantages of this next generation x-ray tube includes low power consumption, which opens up for the creation of portable x-ray devices; and reduced radiation exposure for imaging, which brings with it significant health benefits. The project has also resulted in the filling of two patents and the formation of essential business relationships with customers and partners.

Approach and implementation

The R&D work was initially focused on a high voltage field emission x-ray tube for cardioimaging. Through continuous conversations with partners and potential customers, we gained a better understanding of the needs of the market. And the R&D work was directed towards a microfocus x-ray tube for a Mini C-arm. The change resulted in a MVP with field emission based microfocus tube and two new patents on the tube design. The success in change of of R&D direction demonstrated the benefits of having relationships with customers early on in a project, in our case in the planning stage.
