Venture Innovation management - contribute to the use of knowledge for increased innovation capability

Purpose and goal

As a University hospital, Karolinska has a long tradition of primarily research-driven innovation. And innovation is happening everywhere in the organization. What´s new is our approach to building a systematic support for the innovation work and to professionalize innovation management, a work we do together with others actors in the world through our Center for Innovation. By combining education with support to prioritized project in the organization, we can systematize innovation work in a hospital environment.

Expected results and effects

Three concepts for innovation education adapted to the hospital context (Innovation Ambassador, Innovation for Leaders and Innovation Manager). Trained more than 60 employees and managers in innovation at Karolinska, as well as some patients. Leaders from several parts of the region is now offered education. The e-course Innovation at Karolinska - an introduction (basic course on the Region´s digital course portal). Research-based knowledge of innovation work in healthcare context is now available in the hospital. 9 certified innovation managers at Innovationsplatsen.

Planned approach and implementation

The project worked on developing a offering around innovation management consisting of education, innovation support and descriptive material. During the work, it was identified that one way to provide a faster understanding of innovation methodology is to combine education with the organizantion in working parallel with priority needs-based projects in their everyday lives. The project also investigated the state of the research on innovation management in healthcare. It was found that more research is needed on how innovation work can be done within your own organization.
