Purpose and goal
Develop an ultra-high gain mmW Gapwave-fed reflector antenna with self-tracking function at low cost for 5G mmW backhauling systems.
Expected results and effects
Demonstrate a functional proof-of-concept beam steering antenna that is capable of tracking of - and compensating for - the sway of the mounting structure. This solution will enable the use of high-gain antennas for Wireless transport at sites where this was previously not possible. This solution will enable the roll-out of new 5G sites faster and more cost-efficient.
Planned approach and implementation
The project will investigate and develop solutions for the different challenges that a steerable high-gain antenna system poses. Different work packages address different aspects: requirements, design of a Gapwaveguide feed, design of a Gregorian reflector antenna, design of a tracking mechanism, and integration of the different subsystems into a final demonstrator that will be deployed on a live link.
