Biodegradable functionalized materials for applications in tissue engineering

Reference number
Coordinator KUNGLIGA TEKNISKA HÖGSKOLAN - Institutionen för fiber- och polymerteknologi
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 276 000
Project duration September 2014 - October 2017
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aim was the design and synthesis of degradable functionalized polymeric materials with properly suited architecture and tailored properties, functioning as temporary support for the regeneration of damaged tissues. The project involved interdisciplinary competences, main goal was the development of a product that could meets the requirements of future applications in cellular therapy and regenerative medicine. Further goals were to establish a collaboration between the Swedish and Italian Institutions, to develop the principal investigator´s career at higher level.

Expected results and effects

A novel and versatile strategy to add functional groups and biological cues to degradable aliphatic polyesters was developed. The outcomes of the research activities were summarized in scientific articles published in international journals, seminars and communications at conferences, some also with invitations. DP was involved in the scientific life of the Swedish institutions, followed seminar and courses on leadership development, applied for successful grant.

Planned approach and implementation

A strong collaboration with members of DFPT of KTH was established; as a result further common project applications were finalized. DP was involved in the SSF project (Engineering 3D printed and knitted degradable scaffolds PrintKnit; project leader AFW; number of grant RMA150010). A grant application for joint Research Projects between Italy and Sweden was also submitted. This synergy resulted in an improved capacity to perform interdisciplinary and translational research, as well as in increased knowledge, international visibility and leadership ability for DP.
