Reference number
Coordinator KUNGLIGA TEKNISKA HÖGSKOLAN - Institutionen för transportvetenskap
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 000 000
Project duration November 2012 - January 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project has led to a) a number of methodological developments, many aiming to improve the ability analyse policies for reducing congestion related problem in public transport.b) applications of these developments in a number of important issues, e.g. the metro investments in Stockholm and a package to improve buse services in Stockholm. c) closer contacts and cooperations between researchers and stakeholders, primarily in Stockholm but also in the other major Swedish cities. The goals for the project were a)-c) and were fulfilled.

Results and expected effects

1. Identifying and modeling dynamic congestion effects . The model was applied for evaluating the benefits of an increased public transport capacity in the case of the blue metro line extension to Nacka. 2. Evaluating effects of bus service improvement measures, e.g. increasing stop spacing and boarding from the rear door was evaluated on trunk bus line 4 in Stockholm. 3. Mapping current practices and challenges in the state-of-the-practice 4. Developing an iterative transit assignment model that incorporates congestion in passenger route choice.

Approach and implementation

Methodological improvements built on earlier research projects which could now be refined and developed further. Needs and questions were formulated in close cooperation with SLL and the Stockholm negotiation (the metro commission), and then tested and refined directly in analyses of e.g. metro investments and bus service improvements.
