Purpose and goal

The FFI project ECRA (Ethernet Communication for Real-time Automotive applications) has met the set goals at the time of application in 2016. The project’s objectives have addressed the overall FFI program objectives from enabling technology perspective. Through advanced engineering researches that lead to the development of innovation, proof of concepts, prototypes, tools for making Ethernet as core network in in-vehicle communication. That also open up feasible conditions for the development of new functions in the area of autonomous driving, active safety and infotainment.

Expected results and effects

The ECRA project has produced valuable results and knowledge in various part of realization new Ethernet standard, Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) in the automotive. A set of EMC testing for Ethernet physical layer 1000 Base T1 has been done in vehicle environment. TSN proof of concept with several Volvo use cases have been carried out. Development of a complete Network Simulator tool. Proposal and evaluation of CAN-Ethernet gateway. Tool for measuring performances of AUTOSAR stack. Co-organised Automotive Ethernet Congress 2019 and presentations at Ethernet related conferences.

Planned approach and implementation

The project was structured into 7 WPs. The first WP is project management, other WPs focued on technique. Volvo was responsible for two WPs about requirements, use cases and Ethernet HW aspects. Rise Viktoria focused on real-time Ethernet while other SMEs partners worked with simulation tools and Ethernet software. Project Management was based on monthly reports and meetings in the project team, meetings with the steering group before each reporting to VINNOVA, meeting within each WP when needed, workshops and project seminars. This approach and realization worked very well.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
