160 million SEK for innovation in AI, digital infrastructure and communication for Swedish industry

Published: 14 April 2026

Vinnova is granting 26 project funding to help industry create and seize the opportunities of digitalization. The 160 million SEK investment finances solutions within digital twins, AI-based decision support, autonomy in air, surface and underwater domains for extreme environments, technology for reliable interoperability, and robust connectivity for 6G, among other things.

Swedish industry is facing an ever-growing need for digitalization. To meet this, new, digital innovations are needed that solve real problems. To strengthen innovation capacity, and meet future eligibility requirements for sustainability and resource efficiency, Vinnova is working together with other actors in the innovation and research program Advanced digitalisation.

Vinnova has now made decisions on two of the major calls for proposals within the program: applied AI for industry and digital infrastructure and communication. The projects that have been granted funding meet future-critical challenges on several levels, from interaction between technology and humans to pure technological development.

Within applied AI, 20 project will receive a total of SEK 120 million. The project ideas fall within one of the call's two focus areas, AI-based decision support or AI for real-time applications, and range widely, from decision-conscious collaboration between humans and AI to adaptive industrial robotics and digital twins in food production. The call for proposals was one of Vinnova's most visited last year, until it closed in January.

– AI in industry is a technology area that needs to be pursued in several sectors and at several levels in parallel. Applied AI was a call for proposals that attracted different types actors, from universities and institutes to large industrial players and small businesses. Many of the applicant have also not previously participated in applications to Vinnova. We see this mix as positive, says Staffan Nyström, call manager.

In the call for proposals on digital infrastructure and communication, six project will receive a total of 40 million SEK.

– Half of the approved projects look at different aspects of 6G. It is a relatively new area that needs new solutions. Sweden has historically been a driving force in the development of next-generation wireless networks, and interest remains strong, says Sara Näsström, call manager.
