Policy-related prerequisites for a sustainable conversion to biobased plastics

Reference number

Project duration December 2018 - March 2020
Status Completed
Venture Circular and biobased economy
Call Policy and behavioral issues for a biobased circular economy

Purpose and goal

To create the precondition and guidance for sustainable positions taken within manufacturing, procurement and other organisations in which plastics are being used, when it comes to readjust to bio-based plastics.

Expected results and effects

The results show that, besides price and lack of the right quality, the major obstacles to a conversion are a lack of knowledge about bio-based plastics, guidelines and the policies that exist. The strongest driving forces besides climate benefit are whether they came clear requirements from customers or as mandatory requirements. The expectation is that the recommendations made can serve as a support for procurement in order to be able to make sustainable decisions and accelerate conversion to bio-based plastics.

Planned approach and implementation

The project was carried out in five work packages where the different parts´ deliveries contributed to the others but at the same time constituted a building block for the joint results and the recommendation on the requirements for sustainable procurement presented in the written reports from the project. Information has been collected through a search of literature and on websites. We have also interviewed various organisations such as regions, municipalities and authorities. In addition, a survey was sent to various stakeholders.
