Project duration June 2018 - May 2021
Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme for the Internet of Things

Purpose and goal

The project explored IoT-enhanced material for playful environments that are adaptable, malleable and updatable. The project developed, implemented and evaluated game and play design in IoT-enhanced equipment, focussed on outdoor playground equipment in public settings. The project has resulted in a new playground in Magistratshagen, Linköping, where anyone can experience the design. The site serves as a concrete case in discussion and dissemination of information even now after the end of the project.

Expected results and effects

In the project, IoT-enhanced adaptable playground attractions have been developed. The designs are in themselves commercializable, but more importantly, they serve as a case study and a tool for knowledge transfer between public sector, private sector and academia. The project has generated tools and new knowledge related to technology-enhanced play, and has established a hub for stakeholders in the area where knowledge dissemination and new collaborations can be generated.

Planned approach and implementation

The project coordination, with short planning meetings every or every other week, and with longer workshops on critical issues when needed, have been successful. In parallel, project participants have solved more specific issues in smaller groups and with different partners. Effect goals with clearly delegated responsibilities were set at a design workshop and followed up regularly. A major success factor has been functional communication, which is partly explained by explicated and shared values, directly connected to the effect goals.
