Purpose and goal

Shine is a solar lamp for off-grid Base of Pyramid users we develop in collaboration with our Kenyan test group. Our USP is more ergonomic light for everyday flexible use in very dark surroundings. Vinnova is financing the development of optics with optical engineers and on-site testing of adjusted lamp prototypes with sla printed lenses. The response from users was: you make light good for the eyes. We proceed with milled lens prototypes and factory prototypes of the lamp (financed outside of Vinnova project), the last step before production.

Expected results and effects

Our lens can be produced in a cost-efficient way, provides good light quality through a fractal solution, has a relevant spread, and diminishes glare through size and shape, and supports flexible use. The lamp works well as a learning lamp on a tall lampstand possible to take apart for compact transport, as a pendant for general light, and can also be used as a lantern. In the next step, factory prototyping will make sure we have an acceptable Bill of Materials, heat development, and IP class.

Planned approach and implementation

The development of the lens has proceeded through skype updates and real-life workshops according to plan, it´s been a true joy to collaborate with Bartenbach with a long experience in the product development process. The collaboration with our test group in Kenya has worked well also during the pandemic, though project partners outside the Vinnova project have had problems due to Corona and caused a bit of delay.
