Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project was to strengthen Linköping municipality, and other similar public organizations, in the work of digitalizing the operations in order to increase its quality and efficiency with the help of IoT. This was done through a pilot project in the field of district heating efficiency in distribution, where a prototype was created for improved district heating operations with the aim of contributing to reduced climate impact. One goal was to disseminate project results, which was made through press releases and public appearances.

Expected results and effects

Using the unique prototype solution for sensoring and analyzing data developed within the project, the operation of the district heating network can be streamlined, which is expected to contribute to reducing climate impact. The project has prepared ground for continues testing and further developing preheating of the district heating system. An optimization model has been used to scale up the analysis to the entire regional energy system in order to draw conclusions on costs and climate impact on a larger scale.

Planned approach and implementation

A large number of sensors and related communication solutions were installed in Tekniska verkens i Linköping remote heating network. Measuring data from the sensors are collected in a cloud environment, after which they were visualized as part of the analysis of the improved operations process. The measurement data was then upscaled by an optimization model to provide for a higher generalisability of the results. Project participants were Science Park Mjärdevi AB, Tekniska verken in Linköping AB, Ericsson AB and the Energy Systems Group at Linköping University.
