Important results from the project

The project is very relevant to the FFI program for electronics, software and communication as well as Traffic safety and automated vehicles. The end result of the project provides a D-band radar prototype relevant to the fields of electromobility, active safety, autonomous vehicles and connected vehicles. The overall objective of the project was to develop a first D-Band radar sensor prototype to be mounted on a test vehicle in order to create and collect good test data from test runs on a test track to support future high-frequency radar application areas.

Expected long term effects

The project resulted in a successful D-band radar prototype that was used to collect data from a total of 47 different defined user scenarios representing static measurements of different types of objective measured at distances from 20 to 80 m. The results showed that the relative signal to noise ratios were consistent with simulated values. However, the range or detection distance was less than theoretical expectations due to a synchronization problem. A Volvo car was detected at a distance of 80m, which is a good result. The radar prototype will be used in a newly started FFI project.

Approach and implementation

The project was carried out by four complementary project partners, Veoneer, SafeRadar, Chalmers and RISE. The implementation was organized into six work packages: WP1 Requirements and architecture WP2 Integration and packaging of the D-Band radar chip WP3 D-band radar prototype hardware development WP4 D-band radar prototype signal processing and software development WP5 Test and evaluation of D-band radar prototype WP6 Project management The project suffered from delays due to COVID and difficulties with semiconductor shortages. Even so, it finished on time.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
