Purpose and goal

APR Technologies AB develops a miniature compressor without moving parts powered by thermal energy. The physical principle is based on Knudsen diffusion and the compressor is a critical component of this future small sized vibration-free cryo-cooling system. The graphene material is a unique material in this application with extremely high two dimensional thermal conductivity in thin layers, and enabling adapted permeability to gases. The project will be able to demonstrate and characterize this graphene-based compressor together with the other system components.

Expected results and effects

The project shall: - Establish semi-automatic manufacturing processes with good precision - Optimize graphene material properties - Identify system components and system prototypes that open for the commercialization phase To: - Enable a new graphene based product - Strengthen the Swedish graphene industry through material development and improved manufacturing of the graph film material - Vibration-free and reliable cooling systems that simplify complexity, extend service life and enhance optical performance in a variety of advanced instruments and communication systems

Planned approach and implementation

The project is based on previous work between APR Technologies AB, Chalmers and SHT Smart High-Tech AB. APR Technologies AB leads the project and represents the idea and system perspective. Chalmers performs material characterization and SHT´s role is within material development. A first functional prototype is developed but system´s perspective of manufacturing and integration methods needs to be improved. The graphene material will be developed towards higher thermal conductivity and optimized gas permeability. Other components will be developed and integrated into systems
