Purpose and goal

The aim of this project has been to show the positive effects of bringing together academia and industry in a project where one design, build and test a flying technology demonstrator in an efficient and fast way. The goal has been to, as a test case, design new wings for the existing radio-controlled scale model fighter aircraft GFF. Aim and objective have been achieved by designing new wings with CFD, after which models have been built and tested in both wind tunnels and in flight tests. The data can be used in education and research and a process now exists for similar future project.

Expected results and effects

Two kinds results have been generated. The first is the development of a rapid process to be able to develop flying technology demonstrators. Parts of this process have already been used by Saab who have tested a UAV design in the wind tunnel at KTH. Wind tunnel tests on other geometries have been ordered and more are expected in the future. The second result is a total of approx. 3700 CFD calculations, 172 wind tunnel runs and six flights with approximately seven preselected maneuvers for each flight. There is therefore a solid amount of data that can be used in education and future research.

Planned approach and implementation

Saab has been the leader of this project. In addition to project management, the work has been divided into three work packages. One has been focused on design with CFD. In addition, the results from all work packages have been taken care of here. In another work package, all activities related to wind tunnel testing have been carried out, which has included model development and testing as well as delivery of results. The last work package includes flight test activities. New wings have been produced, weighing of these has been carried out before the flights. Results have been delivered.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
