Purpose and goal

The purpose of DiverFinder is to enable a diveleader to keep track of up to seven divers in a group by showing on the display the approximate distance to individual divers in the group. If a diver comes outside a selectable safety distance, the diveleader and group will be warned. If a diver disappears, his DiverFinder goas into a emergency mode and send out pings so that the diver can be located. DiverFinder should then be able to be put into search mode so that the missing diver can be located.

Expected results and effects

A number of prototypes have been developed for testing in different underwater environments. After pairing, the units should automatically go into normal operation. The diveleaders device must always be active while the divers can choose that the unit is either passive (eg on the tank) or active with the option of sending alarms. With regard to the range of the signal in water, tests have given at least 200 meters distance. However, the expectation is that the distance should be considerably longer depending on improved signal processing.

Planned approach and implementation

All development has been carried out by the three founders of SubDetect AB, who have long experience in hardware and software development. Several generations of prototypes have been developed and tested. Various signal processing solutions have been tested for modulation and demodulation of ultrasound. Sending data with ultrasound is not the same as with radio waves. At least two different methods have proved acceptable.
