Purpose and goal

The aim of the project was to find a way to define an objective sound requirement for switch activation. Through the project with all from sound measurements to listening clinics we found a model that can be applied to current and synthesized sounds to predict the preference of the sound.

Expected results and effects

The result in form of the different parameters in the model for prediction of sound preference and specifications are based on the measurments and listening test are made to easy communicate with supplier of switches. Above all, it makes it possible to control the acoustic properties of switches in a relevant way during both development and production phases. The result of the project is part of the effort to make the interface in cars more attractive, in order to strengthen the competitiveness in a global market where all aspects of a car are important in convincing customers how to choose.

Planned approach and implementation

The first listening test (LT) was about documenting switch sounds from different car manufacturers and then evaluating them with headphones. LT resulted in a ranking in how the switches were preferred. From the first LT, two sounds were selected, they were manipulated regarding sound characters with the intention of moving the position on the preference scale (so the preference for the low ranked sound would increase, and vice versa). The sounds were evaluated again in a second LT. A correlation analysis showed that four different psychoacoustic parameters did the model.
