Purpose and goal
Sepsis is a dynamic life-threatening syndrome defined as a clinical response to an infection but manifests as a complex immunological disorder. Currently, sepsis is as common as cancer, with the highest mortality rate of any acute disease and very high health care costs. We propose CombatSepsis an interdisciplinary research strategy to promote new innovations and ecosystems in sepsis. Our long-term vision is to drastically reduce morbidity and mortality in sepsis and to participate in novel strategies to reduce the societal effects of the rapidly increasing antibiotic resistance.
Expected results and effects
CombatSepsis aims to gather a critical mass of expertise in the problem areas discussed above, designed to provide optimum opportunities for constructive and creative collaboration in the pursuit of improved sepsis care. A core value is that CombatSepsis collaborators have a broad network within their respective community structures with a large number of contact surfaces in different areas that, during the planning phase, will help to connect new key competencies (new players) to the project.
Planned approach and implementation
CombatSepsis will, in the planning phase, mainly work together in the form of a workshop series aimed at analyzing and proposing strategies and innovation projects to create the potential for achieving the goal of reducing mortality in sepsis by 50% to 2035.
