Important results from the project
The purpose of the project was design, prototyping and testing of operational concepts for traffic control of unmanned aircraft (beyond line of sight) for Dubai City in an interactive visualization and traffic simulation. The goal was to (1) visualize unmanned flight for Dubai City, as well as (2) define an operational concept for unmanned traffic and (3) use it to define optimal routes for delivery drones. These project objectives were met except for testing. An adjustment that was carried out was that tests with traffic controllers were replaced with the UTM Explore visualization
Expected long term effects
The project has contributed to establishing contacts between SWE and UAE in the field of technology and the academic field. The diplomatic contacts between SWE and the UAE were enriched at joint meetings. The project has generated knowledge for Swedish conditions about drone services in urban environments which would not have been possible to acquire nationally. This knowledge is now provided in various development and planning activities and project for ex Stockholm City. UTM Explore with Dubai is now also available in the exhibition at visualization center C Linköping Universitet
Approach and implementation
Successful cooperation SWE - UAE with joint learning in the spirit of Trippel Helix. Global "best practices" for service delivery and risk and security analysis are requested. UTM Explore and UTM CITY are a very powerful tool that directly increases understanding of a future impact from drone services. Technical solutions and concepts of operation could be demonstrated and tested hands-on by stakeholders in workshops. The systems can be used to communicate strategies for drone services. It is easy to understand and can be used as an interface to authorities and the public.
