Important results from the project
The overall goal of this project was to explore and demonstrate how V2X communication can function as an effective information carrier between vehicles and cyclists. The purpose was to promote road safety and strengthen the role of the cyclist in the development of a future connected traffic environment.
Expected long term effects
The project has created a prototype consisting of a technical architecture from car to cyclist. The solution utilizes V2X technology and can warn the cyclist in a critical situation. Signals reaches the cyclist through bone conducting headphones. User tests show in particular that vibrations in combination with voice can result in a good user experience. An alternative architecture, that uses a cloud solution, has also been adapted for the project. The solutions can be a starting point for products that can increase road safety and attractiveness for cycling as a means of transport.
Approach and implementation
A survey of V2X technology has been carried out in order to design a suitable architecture for information transfer between car and cyclist. The survey also examined the possibility of using bone-conducting speaker technology in a bicycle helmet to convey traffic information. Various variants of signals were tested with users indoors in a controlled environment. Technical architecture and interaction design were then merged into a prototype that was tested with users and demonstrated to stakeholders. An alternative prototype, based on a cloud solution, was also demonstrated.
