Purpose and goal

In order to increase the benefit of the virtual factory, GameOn has explored the possibility of further developing Everysim with functionality inspired by consumer gaming industry. Inspiring simulations is seen as a complement to traditional education at the university in Luleå. The game has been evaluated in the course pulp and paper technology. The response from students and teachers were overall very positive. The evaluation also revealed proposals to potential functional improvements.

Results and expected effects

The current study shows that cloud-based dynamic simulations combined with gamification is an attractive approach to improve learning and competence development. A high availability of the simulator is a very important factor since students and teachers are working with simulations at different times and through different devices (computer, phone, tablet). Students interest in process dynamics and automation can be increased significantly by implementing gamification in a way that maintains the attention and stimulate long-term strategic thinking.

Approach and implementation

Preparation: development of requirements of game management from an educational perspective (platform attempts at LTU). Implementation: Implementation of the model, interface and game management. Platform tests in the course pulp and paper technology. Delivery: Documentation of implemented activities and evaluation of platform trials. Description of a number of potential future stages of development for the platform including discussions that are broadened beyond the project consortium in order to prepare for future projects.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
