Purpose and goal

The aims of the project were 1) to render media companies new knowledge for the development of new business models for news journalism, and 2) to lay the foundation for further research. Target achievement has been reached by the development of methods and a computer program for the collection of digital traces and survey responses concerning news consumption, by the collection and analyses of such and of qualitative data, by a literature study, and by presenting results for the media companies.

Expected results and effects

The project has generated methods and a computer program for the collection of digital traces (and survey data), data for carried out and for future analyses, and new knowledge about consumers´ news consumption from these analyses and from a literature study. A fruitful ground for further research has thereby been laid, and the outcomes will hopefully be used by the media companies for further product and business model development.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been carried out as partial projects: 1) a platform for the collection of digital traces of digital news consumers and of survey data, and analyses of such data, 2) the development of a program for and collection and analyses of sharing behavior on Facebook, 3) a literature study about digital news consumption, and 4) collection and analysis of qualitative data, and reporting to the media companies. Technical problems arose but were solved.
