Important results from the project
The aim of the project was to create an opportunity for a testbed for the development and production of lignin-based carbon fibre (CF). A foundation for a strong consortium has been created. A number of companies from the Swedish pulp and paper industry have expressed interest in financially support the coming planned application and thereby take part in a consortium. A new melt spinning equipment has successfully been tested using different types of lignin raw materials, and investments have been identified for the conversion into lignin-based CF.
Expected long term effects
The foundation for a strong consortium an application has been established including partners from the whole value-chain from lignin production to CF users. New R&D contacts within the area of lightweight materials, in particular CF, have been established. A testbed for lignin-based CF is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of the Swedish Forestry industry. Swedish industries can take advantage by developing new lightweight materials from lignin-based CF which will decrease our dependence on petrochemicals and lower the fuel consumption.
Approach and implementation
One meeting with the reference group consisting of six industry partners has been conducted. Separate meetings with companies from the Swedish forestry industry have taking place. Innventia has gathered with the network LIGHTer. Contacts have been established with other R&D actors engaged with CF development and utilization. Altogether, the project has resulted in a big interest from the companies and F&U actors that have been contacted regarding the development of a testbed for lignin-based CF. The condition for melt spinning of lignin has been determined for the new instrument.
