Purpose and goal

This pre study has investigated and found that a cost-neutral model can be created and that there are no fundamental legal obstacles to use human biological material from volunteer donors for product development or to test new methods. The health care is willing to support the companies with the material they need, provided that there is informed consent, transparent processes, patient care is the first priority, and that compensation for the extra work can be obtained.

Results and expected effects

This pre study shows that a model for cooperation can be created that both healthcare and life science companies can rely on being lawful, and financially neutral, ensuring that patients have consented, and that patient benefit is considered both at the time of donation and for the products produced by means of the donated material. The model will, with minimal impact in healthcare, result in high quality of products reaching the market, which will be beneficial for both patients and enterprises.

Approach and implementation

A model for giving access to human biological materials with a relevant compensation can be obtained. In the conditions required includes a specific informed consent, methods for time registration and charging for extra work as well as an administrative coordination function to handle requests, coordinate execution and, when needed legal review. Economic growth and patients benefits are dependent on cooperation between healthcare and the enterprises.
