Important results from the project

A full-scale design prototype of a urine dehydration toilet for vacation homes has been developed within the project. The aim was to use the prototype to discuss integration of the toiletsolution in buildings and to evaluate the design. Valuable information about form and function has been collected and the need for new and better toilet solutions for vacation homes has been proven. The project has contributed to decisive steps to reach Harvest Moon´s long-term goal: to create a scalable dry toilet system.

Expected long term effects

The product requirements for the dehydration toilet has been further developed and a prototype has been produced based on information from the workshops. A solution for safe waste handling has been developed during the project and the commercial potential has been evaluated and initial cost estimates have been calculated. Beside vacation homes, additional potential for the solution has been identified. By avoiding sewerage more land for construction can be released and temporary building permits can be better utilized due to cost and time savings for construction of sewers.

Approach and implementation

5 workshops have been held with water & waste water companies, architects and scientists to evaluate and further define the requirements of the product. Product development has taken place parallel to information gathering, which has allowed the conclusions from the workshops and research to be integrated into the concept. The original stand alone toilet was developed into an integrated solution that can be adapted to the environment and customer needs (material, size & price). The project has enabled in-depth market analysis, cost estimates and strategic discussions regarding IP.
