Sustainable production systems for hi-tech manufacturing of MEMS-based sensor systems in Sweden

Reference number
Coordinator KUNGLIGA TEKNISKA HÖGSKOLAN - Skolan för elektro- och systemteknik
Funding from Vinnova SEK 9 999 000
Project duration September 2012 - September 2014
Status Completed
Venture Challenge-driven innovation - Phase 2 Collaboration

Purpose and goal

The project has addressed production challenges of future gas sensor technology. To maintain competitiveness, Sweden needs to strengthen and coordinate efforts to achieve sustainable forms of production, flexible manufacturing systems and new innovative sensor solutions. The goal of the project has been to provide competitive high-volume manufacturing of innovative gas sensors in Sweden and lead the future development in this field. In the project, there have been a number of achievements towards that goal, including new production methods and new sensors solutions.

Results and expected effects

Scalable system architecture with integrated functional packages and high-performance competitive components have been developed and demonstrated. The new production method ´Evolvable Production System´ has been introduced in a testing facility. New key components in the form of miniaturized and mass-producible MEMS-based IR-sensors, electrochemical sensors and cost effective infrared emitters have been developed and secured. Three demonstrator devices have been developed and new application areas have been identified and are now examined further.

Approach and implementation

The work plan has essentially been followed by the consortium partners both in terms of effort in time and content. Demonstrators in WP4 was found to be very fruitful and more time than planned was spent by SenseAir and Hök. Autoliv has engaged more than planned in packaging technology in WP1. Furthermore SenseAir was more involved in WP3, hiring an industrial PhD student in production technology and Silex more in the development of production systems. Maquet and Håja´s efforts were less than originally planned. Maquet´s involvement continues in a more clinically oriented cooperation.
