Purpose and goal

The purpose has been to develop knowledge with regard to how retailers can design and present climate-smart delivery options to consumers in order to minimise the climate impact of e-commerce distribution, and thereby contribute to a fossil-free society. The goal has been to develop a foundation for being able to design climate-smart delivery options. Through literature studies, interviews, case studies and quantitative studies of consumers´ purchasing behaviour, the project has landed in a number of conclusions, which are summarised in a popular science final report.

Expected results and effects

By developing a process for retailers for the design of climate-smart delivery options, the project contributes to an increased understanding of the complexity of retailers who want to offer such delivery options. Furthermore, the project has identified various actors that are essential for collaboration and has highlighted the associated complexity. The results also suggest how consumers can be guided to climate-smart choices in retailers´ checkouts. The project has thus contributed with knowledge on how retailers can design and present climate-smart delivery options.

Planned approach and implementation

The project included four work packages (WP). Literature studies and a website analysis of the delivery options at Sweden´s largest retailer (WP2) were carried out. Analysis of consumers´ purchases and how these were affected by the delivery options´ climate impact was performed (WP3). Case studies, interviews and workshops were carried out throughout the project, in order to, among other things, identify which forms of collaboration are required to bring about climate-smart delivery options to consumers (WP4). Much emphasis was put into dissemination of results (WP1).
