Purpose and goal

The aim of the pre-study was to explore the potential of more effective and efficient sub-urban logistics for freight transport in metropolitan regions and to highlight the importance of sub-urban logististcs in the overall logistics infrastructure and its external effects. The aim has been achieved as the pre-study highlights that the transport system is perceived as vulnerable with congestion issues, while also highlighting that there are good opportunities to increase the capacity of existing infrastructure through dynamic prioritization.

Expected results and effects

The pre-study has resulted in a number of concrete measures that in an implementation stage may contribute to several of the goals in the Roadmap for efficient and connected transport, and is expected to further contribute to a number of impact objectives, such as increased transport volumes with minimal environmental impact, and creating new business opportunities in the field. Furthermore, it contributes to the availability objectives and competitiveness of transport operators with innovative solutions related to integrated solutions between vehicles and infrastructure.

Planned approach and implementation

The pre-study has been conducted in collaboration between Closer/LSP, DB Schenker, The Swedish Transport Administration, Chalmers, KTH, Volvo Group and Scania. The coordination of the project was achieved through regular meetings where the six work packages were discussed and coordinated. Data was obtained from literature studies and interviews with carriers, shippers and other stakeholders. The addressed subject is very complex and it can be concluded that to get further, broader collaboration with multi-stakeholder perspective is needed.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
