Stochastic models for optimal Air Traffic Flow Management

Reference number
Coordinator Linköpings universitet - Institutionen för teknik och naturvetenskap
Funding from Vinnova SEK 650 000
Project duration September 2018 - December 2021
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project was to develop and test new, innovative models for ATFM (Air Traffic Flow Management), i.e. overall flow planning of air traffic. The visionary goal is that these will contribute to an improved air traffic flow, with reduced delays and reduced environmental impact. A more short-term objective was to strengthen the research collaboration between the partners, which was done through joint work in research and teaching and joint publications.

Expected results and effects

The planned output was two scientific articles, but during the project, as many as five journal articles and a doctoral dissertation were produced. One article has been published, two are under first revision for journals and two will be sent to journals in 2022. An unplanned collaboration in teaching was also carried out within the project. Through the project, the parties have gotten to know each other well, and all are keen to continue the cooperation.

Planned approach and implementation

The work in the project has mainly been carried out by Université Paris-Saclay and the University of Sharjah with support from Linköping University (LiU) and LFV. LFV has delivered traffic data to the project, and assisted with expert knowledge within ATM. LiU has supported with expert knowledge in optimization and modeling of ATM systems. Collaboration has taken place via two physical and a number of virtual workshops and meetings, as well as the exchange of data, models and expert knowledge.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
